Painting in Nature in Jamaica Plain And Brookline

These classes are for anyone who has the desire to experience the joy and inspiration of painting in nature. Iris provides guidance in using materials, creating compositions, using color, learning how to see the landscape, and she offers critiques for those who would benefit from supportive feedback. Classes are small and convene in nature (weather permitting) or in Iris’s studio. No experience is necessary, but more advanced students may find this class helpful in refining their painting goals, developing a body of work, or just want to paint with a group of fellow artists. Iris also teaches this as a course every summer through Lesley University, so you may get college credit (Lesley tuition in lieu of class fee) if you are interested in that option. 30 per three hour class.

Individual Creativity Coaching and Counseling

It’s so delightful to see someone who’s put aside his or her artistic inspiration for years, make the commitment to open to the possibilities and joy that creative expression can bring to ones life. Iris specializes in creating an atmosphere in her studio that helps clients free the blocks and obstacles that have prevented them from enjoying one of life’s great pleasures…. creating.
She also assists artists who need support in creating a body of work, developing an artistic project, and achieving artistic goals. Iris addresses the paradox of artist’s desire/fear of failure, as well as the desire/fear of success. She also employs a technique developed by her husband psychotherapist Jim Grant, called Visual Self Encounter (VSE) which utilizes video as a means for the client to “see” themselves, and the spectrum of their potential, in a guided process of discovery. This “self-seeing” helps to free the self-misperceptions that define and imprison our creative energies.
Iris offers ongoing private critiques of works in progress, and helps clients discover the personal myths they’d like to express in a more conscious and creative way.

$75 per one-hour session

Sacred Thresholds

Creating your own Sacred Threshold

In this class, students will create their own sacred threshold, which symbolizes a passage in their life that they would like to commemorate or sacralize through image, symbol, and form. The above image was created to honor a boy’s Bar mitzvah, where he chose the story of Jacob’s ladder as the sacred theme for his celebration. The finished piece is 10” high, 6” wide, and with the doors open measures 10” x 11”. It’s constructed with wood, architectural molding, 2 ply mat board, oil paint, carpenter’s wood filler, and gold and silver metal leaf.

Students have created sacred thresholds to celebrate marriages, anniversaries, the birth of a baby, the empty next, a divorce, the passing of a beloved friend or relative, a new home, a new job, or a significant accomplishment.

Iris leads students through a process that helps them get in touch with the symbols and images, and the manner in which they want to construct their piece. Each piece is unique to the individual who creates it, and usually takes six weeks to complete.
